Carpe diem - Seize the Day
A film that abstractly came to the foreground of my memory whilst I was creating a new set on Polyvore tonight is a film called Dead Poet's Society. I remember buying this film on VHS and watching it over and over again. Now I can't remember the exact details, and I no longer have a copy, but I remember parts of the film, and the effect it seemed to have on me. I wanted to have guidance as an adolescent and I wanted a role model to help me believe in myself. I saw this in the character of Mr Keating and was jealous that these boys got to have that. I loved the problematic teenage angst of the main characters, the pressures they had from parents and teachers, and the comradeship they gained in each other throughout their semester at Welton.
The main thing I loved about this film is that the boys are taught to look at life from different perspectives, to make the most out of it. To challenge the norm, and to think wholly for themselves. When was the last time you did something out of the ordinary? When was the last time you stood on your desk to see the room from a different angle? Would you stand up for what you believed was right - even in a tricky situation?
